Questions and Answers about Volunteering
What kind of volunteers are you looking for?
We are seeking warm and loving people who are good listeners and can be a caring friend.
How will I be matched?
The ASK staff will learn everything they can about you and the inmate through your applications and personal interviews. Special consideration will be given regarding age, language, hobbies, interests, etc. Special requests, mentioned in your interview, will be honored whenever possible. After prayerful consideration, a match is made.
Do I need training?
You must attend an initial training session before you can be matched. A staff member will accompany you to the prison and introduce you to your new friend.
How often do I visit?
To fulfill your ASK commitmemt, you must visit at least twice the first month and once a month thereafter. You may visit more often if you desire to, and if the institution visiting regulations allow it.
Where will my visits take place?
A safe and comfortable environment has been provided in the prison visiting room where others will also be visiting. There are vending machines available for sodas and snacks.
How much time will my monthly commitment take?
You will be able to fulfill your commitment in four to six hours per month, depending on how far you have to drive to the institution.
Will my match 'friend' have my address?
No. It is not permitted.
What do I do when my friend paroles?
If you are able, we hope you will continue to maintain the caring friendship you have developed with your match. We encourage you to meet him or her on the day of his or her release and help him or her make the transition smoother. However, we strictly prohibit you from having your friend come and live in your home.
